“Make our world a better place.”
– A message from L’Arche Founder, Jean Vanier.
High school retreats at L’Arche are an opportunity for students to deepen the sense of community that they share with their classmates. Through play, introspection, discussion and art, students are afforded the space to let their guard down and share openly with their peers. A core member of the retreat team says that these retreats are a time for “sharing and meeting.”
Our retreats are centered around the idea of hope. Using interactive mediums and approaches to learning, students are encouraged to engage in thinking about what they hope for individually and what they hope for communally. And the retreats are also a time for students to be exposed to the philosophy that informs L’Arche and the way of life that it promotes. They are introduced to core members (people labeled with intellectual disabilities) and assistants who live in the L’Arche community and are pushed to think about their own value spectrum as they learn about the values of L’Arche.
We believe that L’Arche has a particularly important voice when considering the theme of hope and the subject of values. Our team is made up of people with mixed abilities and interests, all of whom bring their own unique gifts to the retreat setting, and we very much enjoy welcoming students and learning with them throughout the day.
