Keeping safe and active with a continued sense of connectedness and community

Our new day program, which was started because core members were not able to go out to their normal programs in the community, has been hugely successful and has enriched core members’ lives in a number of ways: enhancing their physical and mental well-being through swimming, yoga, walks, and meditation; building and maintaining community networks; developing skills such as sewing, carpentry, art, cooking and baking; engaging in community service work such as food drives, a fundraiser for solidarity, and toxic waste collections; and exploring the city, which brings opportunities to interact with others and create new interests.

For example, Robert is interested in local history and the arts. Within the model of one-to-one programming, he has been able to go to the Toronto Reference Library and research the history of Toronto. He has  also visited many historical sites in Toronto, including Fort York and the Distillery District. Robert has a large-scale map of Toronto and uses this to mark locations he has been to and found interesting. With this information he hopes to start his own podcast or blog about his travels and learnings.

Kathy  has a known affinity for tea as well as a desire to stay connected and remain a supportive friend. She started creating her own personalized tea blends. Kathy learnt how to dry herbs from their garden as well as dehydrate the rinds of fruit. She then used these ingredients to produce teas which she gave to her friends and family. During the process of preparing the ingredients Kathy was able to work on her cooking skills, kitchen safety and fine motor skills.
